For hundreds of years, the Mediterranean Sea has been very important for shipping and trade. The Suez Canal links the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. It's man-made and it was opened in 1869. The Suez Canal makes it easier to travel to Europe from Asia, for example.
To go from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean ships have to pass through the Straits of Gibraltar.
Some important ports in the Mediterranean area are Barcelona, Venice, Genoa, Athens, Monaco, Gibraltar, Tripoli and Istanbul. The most famous river that flows into the Mediterranean in the Nile. Other rivers like the Rhone, the Ebre and the Tiber also flow into the Mediterranean Sea
